Two very different things get called “downloading Spotify,” and the confusion between them is why this comparison exists.
One is a feature built into Spotify’s own desktop and mobile apps: a Premium subscriber saves tracks for offline playback inside the app. The other is a category of browser-based sites that take a Spotify link and hand back an MP3.
They are not competing versions of the same feature. They differ in what you end up with, what it costs, whether it’s legal, and what happens to it six months later. Here’s the comparison across every dimension that matters, and a clear answer at the end.
What each one actually is
The Spotify desktop app downloads encrypted audio to your computer, playable only inside Spotify while your subscription is active. It’s the same mechanism as mobile offline downloads. You need Premium, and the files never leave the app in a usable form.
Online downloaders are websites that accept a Spotify URL and produce a file. They work either by stripping Spotify’s DRM or, more commonly, by matching the track to a copy sourced elsewhere — usually YouTube or a similar public platform — and re-encoding that as an MP3. Either method breaks something: the first breaks encryption, the second delivers audio that isn’t the recording you asked for.
That second detail is worth sitting with, because it’s the least understood part of this whole topic. A large share of what these sites return is not Spotify audio at all. It’s whatever the site found elsewhere that shares a title and artist.

The one column where the downloader wins outright is the first, and it’s worth being clear about what that free actually costs.
Audio quality
The desktop app downloads at whatever you’ve set: High at around 160 kbps, Very High at around 320 kbps, or lossless FLAC if you’re on that tier. Those are the real files from Spotify’s catalog.
Online downloaders overwhelmingly deliver 128 kbps MP3, and that number is doing less work than it looks like. When a site sources audio from a video platform, it’s taking an already-compressed stream and compressing it again into MP3. Every re-encode discards information the previous encode already thinned out. The result is measurably worse than a 128 kbps file made from a clean master, and it’s audible on decent headphones as smeared cymbals and a hollow quality in the high end.
Some sites advertise 320 kbps. Upsampling a 128 kbps source to 320 doesn’t restore anything; it produces a larger file containing the same degraded audio. The bitrate label describes the container, not the content.

You often don’t get the song you asked for
This is the failure mode people don’t anticipate.
Because many of these sites match by title and artist rather than pulling the specific recording, you routinely end up with the wrong version. A live recording instead of the studio take. A sped-up edit someone uploaded. A cover by a different act with a similar name. A remaster when you wanted the original, or vice versa. Radio edits with verses missing. Tracks that fade out early because the uploader’s copy did.
On a playlist of 200 songs, you might not notice for weeks. Then a track comes on in the car and it’s forty seconds shorter than it should be, or there’s crowd noise in the intro.
The desktop app plays the exact recording Spotify licensed, every time.
Metadata
Spotify’s app handles this invisibly, so it’s easy to forget it exists: album art, artist, album, track number, release year, genre, and the ordering that keeps an album in sequence.
Files from online downloaders arrive with metadata ranging from partial to absent. Common outcomes are a filename and nothing else, album art missing entirely, or fields populated from a video title, which is how you end up with an artist field reading something like “Official Video HD.”
If you’re building a local library, fixing this by hand across a few hundred tracks is an evening’s work with a tag editor. Most people don’t bother, and the library stays a mess.
Legality
This is the part that determines everything else, so it’s worth stating plainly.
Stripping DRM is a legal violation in its own right, separate from copyright infringement. Section 1201 of the DMCA prohibits it in the United States, and the EU Copyright Directive contains equivalent provisions. It applies regardless of whether you pay for Premium, and regardless of what you do with the file afterwards. No personal-use exemption covers it.
Where a site sources from a video platform instead, it’s still unlicensed reproduction and distribution of a commercial recording, and it breaches that platform’s terms as well.
Using these sites also breaches Spotify’s terms of use, which is grounds for account termination.
The desktop app is a licensed product doing exactly what its licence permits. There’s no ambiguity on either side of this comparison.
Security
Free sites need revenue, and this category monetises through some of the least discriminating ad networks on the web.
The practical experience is fake download buttons, forced redirects, browser notification prompts that persist after you leave, and pages that push extension installs. Some serve files that aren’t audio at all. Security researchers have documented this category as a persistent malware distribution channel for years, and the economics ensure it stays that way: the sites are disposable, the domains rotate, and there’s no reputational cost to the operator.
Downloadable converter applications carry the same risk with a larger blast radius, since you’re granting an executable full access to your machine rather than just loading a webpage.
The desktop app is signed software from a public company. Whatever else you think of Spotify, it isn’t bundling adware.
Reliability
Online downloaders break constantly. Sites go dark, get blocked, change domains, stop working when Spotify or the source platform changes something. A tool that worked last month often doesn’t today, and the replacement someone recommends in a forum thread is frequently a clone with worse ads.
Playlist handling is usually capped or broken. Large playlists time out partway. Batch downloads fail silently, so you find out later that 40 tracks are missing.
The desktop app works the same way every day. When it doesn’t, the causes are well documented and fixable — storage, cache, offline mode, device slots — and there’s a standard checklist for downloads that won’t complete.
Cost, honestly
Premium runs roughly $12 a month for an individual, less per head on Duo or Family, and there’s a student rate.
Online downloaders are free at the point of use. That’s a real advantage and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. If money is genuinely tight, “free” carries weight.
But compare like for like. What you get free is a degraded copy of possibly the wrong recording, with broken metadata, from a site trying to install something, in violation of terms that could close the account holding your playlists. What you get for $12 is the entire catalog at full quality on demand, across devices, with recommendations that are the main reason most people use Spotify at all.

What the desktop app doesn’t do
A fair comparison acknowledges the real limitation, because it’s the reason people go looking for alternatives.
Spotify downloads are not yours. They live inside the app; they vanish when the subscription ends; they expire after 30 days without an internet check-in; and they’re capped at five devices. You cannot put them on an MP3 player, burn them to a disc, load them onto a USB stick for a car stereo, or use them in a video project.
That’s a genuine constraint, and it’s the honest weakness in Spotify’s side of this comparison. If what you want is a file you own and control, the desktop app does not provide it and never will.
The mistake is concluding that online downloaders are therefore the answer. They solve the ownership problem illegitimately, badly, and with worse audio.
The option that actually resolves it
If you want files you own, buy them. This is the third column the comparison usually leaves out, and for anyone whose real goal is permanence, it’s the winning one.
A purchased track has no DRM, no expiry, no device limit, correct metadata, and audio quality better than anything a converter produces. It plays in any app, on any device, in ten years, whether or not Spotify still exists.
The iTunes Store sells individual tracks around $1.29 as DRM-free AAC. Amazon’s digital store sells MP3s. Bandcamp is the place for independent artists and often offers FLAC, with a far larger share reaching the artist. Qobuz sells lossless. Beatport covers electronic and dance. Free Music Archive and the Internet Archive host Creative Commons and public domain music that’s legally free to keep.
Most people have perhaps thirty songs they’d genuinely be upset to lose. Thirty tracks costs about $39, roughly three months of Premium, and it’s permanent.
The arrangement that makes sense for most listeners is both: subscribe for discovery and breadth, buy the handful of records you want unconditionally.
What the desktop app does that mobile doesn’t
Since the comparison is specifically about the desktop client, a few things it handles better than the phone app are worth knowing, because most people never open its settings.
Cache control. The desktop app lets you cap its cache size, which mobile doesn’t. Left alone, desktop caches grow to 10 GB or more on a machine that’s had Spotify installed for a few years. Setting a ceiling of a couple of gigabytes in Settings, under Storage, prevents that quietly.
Local files. The desktop app can add music from your own drive into Spotify’s interface, which is where purchased tracks and streaming music can sit side by side in the same library. Enable it under Settings, Local Files, and point it at a folder. Those files then sync to your phone over a shared Wi-Fi network with the desktop app running.
This matters for the ownership question above. If you buy the thirty songs you’d hate to lose, the desktop app is where they can live alongside everything you stream, rather than in a separate player you never open.
Exclusive Mode and DAC output. If you’re on the lossless tier and feeding external audio hardware, desktop is the only place you can route output properly and bypass the operating system’s mixer. Lossless over Bluetooth is re-compressed before it reaches your ears, so on a phone with wireless earbuds the tier is largely theoretical.
Crossfade and gapless playback are more configurable on desktop, which matters for live albums and mixed records that were never meant to have silence between tracks.
The verdict
For listening, the desktop app wins on every axis except price, and the gap is large enough that price doesn’t rescue the alternative.
For owning, neither one is the answer. The desktop app can’t give you files, and online downloaders give you bad files illegitimately. Buying is the answer, and it costs less than people assume.
The question worth asking isn’t which of these two to use. It’s whether you want access or ownership, because those have different solutions, and trying to get ownership out of an access product is what sends people to sites full of malicious ads in the first place.
