That’s the honest headline, and there’s no configuration or workaround that changes it. But it’s also the only thing you lose, and most people arrive at this question fearing something much worse. Playlists, Liked Songs, saved albums, followed artists, listening history, followers \u2014 all of it survives intact.<\/p>

Here’s the precise timeline, what the free tier still gives you, and the one sequencing mistake that turns a reversible downgrade into permanent data loss.<\/p>

The timeline<\/strong><\/h2>

When you click cancel:<\/strong> nothing happens immediately. You keep full Premium access, downloads included, until the end of the billing period you’ve already paid for. Cancelling on the 3rd when your period runs to the 28th means 25 more days of normal service.<\/p>

One exception:<\/strong> cancelling during a free trial switches you to free straight away rather than at the trial’s end date. And those trials can’t be restarted, so there’s no reason to cancel a trial early.<\/p>

When the period ends:<\/strong> the account flips to free and downloads are removed from every device. Not hidden, not greyed out pending renewal. Removed. The app can no longer authenticate the cached files against Spotify’s licensing layer, so it discards them.<\/p>

A Spotify download is not a file you saved. It’s an encrypted cache plus a licence, and the cache is meaningless without the licence. The files are Ogg Vorbis encrypted against your account and that specific app installation \u2014 not MP3s in a folder somewhere.<\/p>

Spotify licenses streaming rights from labels on the condition that audio never becomes portable and never outlives the subscription. When you stop paying, the rights holders stop being paid, and the licence to hold local copies ends with it.<\/p>

So when Premium lapses, the problem isn’t that files vanished. It’s that the key did. Recovery software can’t help, because there’s nothing wrong with the data.<\/p>

This is also why the 30-day rule exists while you’re subscribed: Spotify needs a periodic connection to verify the licence and report plays. Downloads that expire mid-subscription are the same mechanism firing early.<\/p>

You keep:<\/strong> unlimited on-demand listening on desktop and web, your entire library and all playlists, Liked Songs, saved albums, followed artists, podcast subscriptions, playlist folders, followers, collaborative playlists, and your listening history feeding recommendations. Downgrading is not deleting<\/strong><\/h2>

This distinction matters more than any other point here, and the two get conflated constantly.<\/p>

Downgrading to free<\/strong> costs you downloads and nothing else. It’s fully reversible. The account persists indefinitely at no cost, holding everything you built.<\/p>

Deleting the account<\/strong> is permanent and takes everything: playlists, Liked Songs, saved albums, followers, history, the lot. There’s a short recovery window and then it’s gone.<\/p>

If you’re stopping because of cost, downgrade. There’s no reason to delete, and keeping the free account preserves everything in case you come back.<\/p>

Spotify does keep deleted playlists for about 90 days with a recovery page, but that only helps if the account still exists.<\/p>

Note what you had downloaded.<\/strong> Not the audio, the list. If a specific playlist was your commute soundtrack, having its track list makes rebuilding elsewhere straightforward.<\/p>

Screenshot your playlist folders.<\/strong> Spotify’s API doesn’t expose folder structure, so nothing can export it. If you’ve organised carefully, a screenshot is the only record that survives.<\/p>

This is what most people are actually asking when they search this question, so here’s the direct answer.<\/p>

Downloads can’t be made permanent. Any tool claiming otherwise works by stripping Spotify’s DRM, which is a legal violation in its own right \u2014 separate from copyright infringement, prohibited under Section 1201 of the DMCA in the US and equivalent provisions in the EU Copyright Directive, and applicable regardless of whether you paid for Premium. It breaches Spotify’s terms, and that software category has a long record as a malware vector.<\/p>

The route that works is older and simpler: buy the tracks that matter.<\/p>

A purchased file has no licence to expire, no device limit, no check-in requirement, and no subscription behind it. It plays in any app, on any device, in ten years, whether or not Spotify exists. The iTunes Store and Amazon sell individual tracks around $1.29 as DRM-free files. Bandcamp sells directly from artists, often in FLAC, with a far larger share reaching the musician. Qobuz does lossless. Free Music Archive and the Internet Archive host Creative Commons and public domain music that’s legally free to keep.<\/p>

Run the numbers. Premium is roughly $12 a month, about $144 a year, which is around 110 purchased tracks. Most people have perhaps thirty songs they’d genuinely be upset to lose. Thirty tracks costs about $39 \u2014 three months of subscription \u2014 and it’s permanent.<\/p>

For a lot of people the sensible arrangement is both: subscribe for discovery and breadth, own the handful of records you’d want on a desert island. Streaming is an excellent way to find music and a poor way to keep it.<\/p>

Alternatives to cancelling outright<\/strong><\/h2>

If the reason is cost rather than dissatisfaction, a few options preserve downloads.<\/p>

Duo<\/strong> covers two accounts and works out cheaper per person. Family<\/strong> covers up to six, each with their own library and download slots, and per head it’s the cheapest option by a distance \u2014 worth asking around before cancelling, since a household or friend group sharing a Family plan usually beats everyone paying individually. Spotify does require members to share a home address and re-verifies periodically.<\/p>

Student pricing<\/strong> is roughly half, with annual verification.<\/p>

Win-back offers.<\/strong> Spotify periodically emails lapsed subscribers with discounted returns, usually a month or two at a reduced rate. Waiting a few weeks after cancelling sometimes produces one.<\/p>

Switching rather than stopping.<\/strong> If you’re leaving because another service suits you better, playlists move across in minutes now that most platforms have built-in importers.
