FLAC compresses without discarding anything, so the file size depends on the music. A sparse acoustic track compresses well and might land at 20 MB. A dense, loud mix can push past 35 MB. At Lossless it exceeds the capacity of nearly every phone sold.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"61:1-61:109;2873-2981\">Spotify&#8217;s 10,000-track limit is generous on paper and unreachable in practice for anyone above High quality.<\/p><h2 class=\"mt-3 -mb-1 text-[1.125rem] font-bold\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"63:1-63:27;2983-3009\"><strong>Podcasts and audiobooks<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"65:1-65:52;3011-3062\">Different numbers, and people forget to count them.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"67:1-67:246;3064-3309\"><strong>Podcasts<\/strong> typically stream at 96 to 128 kbps, and episodes run long. A 60-minute episode is roughly 45 to 55 MB. Subscribe to five weekly shows with auto-download on and you&#8217;re adding a couple of gigabytes a month without touching your music.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"69:1-69:180;3311-3490\">Spotify does auto-delete episodes it thinks you&#8217;ve finished, on a schedule you can change in podcast settings. If your storage keeps creeping up, check whether that&#8217;s switched on.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"71:1-71:152;3492-3643\"><strong>Audiobooks<\/strong> are the quiet giant. A 12-hour audiobook at 128 kbps is around 660 MB. Two or three downloaded books can outweigh several hundred songs.<\/p><h2 class=\"mt-3 -mb-1 text-[1.125rem] font-bold\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"73:1-73:32;3645-3676\">The separate cache<\/h2><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"75:1-75:141;3678-3818\">Downloads aren&#8217;t the whole story. Spotify keeps a cache of streamed audio, artwork, and metadata alongside them, and it grows independently.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"77:1-77:254;3820-4073\">On a phone, this typically sits somewhere between 1 and 5 GB, though it can go considerably higher on an account that streams heavily without downloading. On desktop it commonly runs larger still, since desktop caches aggressively and nobody ever checks.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"79:1-79:135;4075-4209\">When your phone&#8217;s storage screen says Spotify is using 40 GB and you only downloaded a few hundred songs, the cache is the difference.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"81:1-81:178;4211-4388\">Clearing it is safe. Settings, then Storage, then Clear cache. It does not touch your downloads and does not affect playlists. Spotify rebuilds what it needs as you use the app.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"83:1-83:94;4390-4483\">Worth doing every few months, and worth doing immediately if you&#8217;re troubleshooting anything.<\/p><h2 class=\"mt-3 -mb-1 text-[1.125rem] font-bold\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"85:1-85:43;4485-4527\"><strong>How to check what you&#8217;re actually using<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"87:1-87:48;4529-4576\">Two places, and they disagree, which is normal.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"89:1-89:149;4578-4726\"><strong>In Spotify:<\/strong> Settings, then Storage. This shows downloads and cache separately, with a button to clear the cache and one to remove all downloads.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"91:1-91:191;4728-4918\"><strong>On your phone:<\/strong> iPhone, Settings, General, iPhone Storage, then Spotify. Android: Settings, Apps, Spotify, Storage. These show the app&#8217;s total footprint including the binary and app data.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"93:1-93:154;4920-5073\">The phone&#8217;s number is always higher because it counts things Spotify doesn&#8217;t report. If the gap is more than a couple of gigabytes, cache is the culprit.<\/p><h2 class=\"mt-3 -mb-1 text-[1.125rem] font-bold\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"95:1-95:51;5075-5125\"><strong>Cutting your usage without hearing a difference<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"97:1-97:96;5127-5222\">This is the practical part, and the honest version of it is shorter than most articles make it.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"99:1-99:355;5224-5578\"><strong>Drop from Very High to High.<\/strong> Halves your storage instantly. On phone speakers, ordinary earbuds, in a car, or over any Bluetooth connection, the difference between 160 and 320 kbps is inaudible to essentially everyone. Bluetooth re-compresses the audio anyway, so at that point you&#8217;re storing detail that gets thrown away before it reaches your ears.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"101:1-101:200;5580-5779\">Settings, then Audio quality, then Download. Change it there. On a phone with wireless earbuds you are storing 27 MB per song to hear something functionally identical to a 4.8 MB file. It only changes where new ones go. Old downloads either stay where they were or become unreachable, and you&#8217;ll usually want to remove everything and re-download after switching.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"123:1-123:266;7260-7525\">And cheap SD cards are slow and fail. A card that can&#8217;t sustain read speeds will produce stuttering playback, and a card that dies takes your entire offline library with it. It doesn&#8217;t warn you, and it doesn&#8217;t ask. So low storage doesn&#8217;t just block new downloads; it silently erases existing ones. If a chunk of your offline library vanished after you installed a large game or shot a lot of video, that&#8217;s why, and it&#8217;s one of <a class=\"underline underline underline-offset-2 decoration-1 decoration-current\/40 hover:decoration-current focus:decoration-current\" href=\"https:\/\/spotidown.net\/en\/spotify-downloads-disappeared\/\">several reasons downloads disappear without warning<\/a>.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"133:1-133:512;8180-8691\">Before that point, you&#8217;ll usually see downloads failing or stalling instead. Spotify wants at least 1 GB of headroom to work with, and more when it&#8217;s writing large batches, since it needs room for the finished files, temporary data during the download, and the cache simultaneously.
