There&#8217;s no cap and no reason to log out of anything for this purpose.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"17:1-17:318;1110-1427\"><strong>Devices that can stream at once: one.<\/strong> On an Individual plan, playback happens on one device at a time. Start music on your laptop while your phone is playing and the phone pauses. This isn&#8217;t a device limit exactly, it&#8217;s a concurrency limit, and it&#8217;s why sharing an account with a partner is miserable in practice.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"19:1-19:166;1429-1594\"><strong>Devices that can hold downloads: five.<\/strong> This is the real limit and the one that produces error messages. Most people never get near it. If you have, the honest advice is to prune rather than to look for a workaround, because a library that size on a phone is also going to run into storage problems, and downloading music you&#8217;ll never play is a habit worth breaking regardless.<\/p><h2 class=\"mt-3 -mb-1 text-[1.125rem] font-bold\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"44:1-44:62;2912-2973\"><strong>Why the limit blocks you when you&#8217;ve only used two devices<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"46:1-46:59;2975-3033\">Here&#8217;s the part that makes people think Spotify is broken.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"48:1-48:255;3035-3289\">Slots are held by <em>any device that has ever downloaded<\/em>, not by devices you currently use. The phone you traded in last year still holds one. Neither does uninstalling the app, if you didn&#8217;t remove downloads first.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"52:1-52:143;3585-3727\">So the error reads &#8220;you&#8217;re out of offline devices&#8221; while you&#8217;re sitting there with two devices, and the culprit is hardware you no longer own.<\/p><h2 class=\"mt-3 -mb-1 text-[1.125rem] font-bold\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"54:1-54:18;3729-3746\"><strong>Freeing a slot<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"56:1-56:31;3748-3778\">Three ways, in order of speed.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"58:1-58:213;3780-3992\"><strong>Remove downloads from a device you still have.<\/strong> Open Spotify on it, go to Settings, then Storage, then Remove all downloads. On Android, clearing the app&#8217;s data does the same thing.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"60:1-60:380;3994-4373\"><strong>Wait for the licence to expire.<\/strong> A device that goes 30 days without connecting to the internet has its offline licence revoked automatically, and its slot released. If the blocking device is genuinely gone, the slot will free itself within a month of that device&#8217;s last connection. This is the only route when the hardware is sold or dead, and there&#8217;s no way to accelerate it.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"62:1-62:204;4375-4578\"><strong>Contact Spotify support.<\/strong> They can clear devices from their end. It takes a few days and requires explaining the situation, but it works when you&#8217;re stuck with a slot held by hardware you can&#8217;t reach.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"64:1-64:160;4580-4739\"><strong>The habit worth adopting:<\/strong> before you sell, trade in, or factory reset a device, remove its downloads first. If you have a watch you&#8217;ve paired with Spotify at any point, check it.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"72:1-72:308;5273-5580\"><strong>Car head units.<\/strong> Some vehicles run Spotify natively rather than mirroring your phone through CarPlay or Android Auto. Native means the car itself can download, and the car itself takes a slot. Cars are also the hardest slot to reclaim later, since a sold vehicle isn&#8217;t something you can open Settings on.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"74:1-74:148;5582-5729\"><strong>Work machines.<\/strong> A desktop app you signed into once at an old job, downloaded a playlist on, and forgot. Very common, and unreachable afterwards.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"76:1-76:195;5731-5925\"><strong>Old tablets.<\/strong> The classic. A tablet used for one holiday three years ago, now in a drawer with a dead battery, still holding a slot until someone charges it or 30 days of non-connection pass.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"78:1-78:295;5927-6221\">The distinction that matters throughout: <strong>CarPlay and Android Auto don&#8217;t take a slot<\/strong>, because they&#8217;re projecting your phone&#8217;s screen and playing your phone&#8217;s files. Neither does casting to a speaker, or Spotify Connect, or anything that streams rather than stores. Only local storage counts.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"80:1-80:230;6223-6452\">If you&#8217;re trying to work out where your five went, list every piece of hardware you&#8217;ve owned in the past three years and ask which of them ever played Spotify without a connection. The answer is usually more things than expected.<\/p><h2 class=\"mt-3 -mb-1 text-[1.125rem] font-bold\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"82:1-82:24;6454-6477\"><strong>Family and Duo plans<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"84:1-84:81;6479-6559\">The limit is per account, not per plan. That trips people up in both directions.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"86:1-86:282;6561-6842\"><strong>Premium Family<\/strong> covers up to six accounts, each with its own five download devices. Thirty devices across the household in total. Each member also gets their own 10,000-per-device ceiling, their own playlists, and their own recommendations. Members can&#8217;t use each other&#8217;s slots.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"88:1-88:69;6844-6912\"><strong>Premium Duo<\/strong> works the same way for two accounts, so ten devices.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"90:1-90:382;6914-7295\">One thing to watch on Family: Spotify requires all members to share a home address and re-verifies periodically. Fail that check and the member account quietly drops to free, at which point downloads disappear from every device and the slots become irrelevant. Fifty thousand songs across five devices exceeds what almost anyone listens to. When people hit the limit, it&#8217;s nearly always the device count rather than the track count, and nearly always because of retired hardware rather than genuine simultaneous use.<\/p><h2 class=\"mt-3 -mb-1 text-[1.125rem] font-bold\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"108:1-108:34;8752-8785\"><strong>If five genuinely isn&#8217;t enough<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"110:1-110:76;8787-8862\">Some honest options, since no configuration raises the number.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"112:1-112:153;8864-9016\"><strong>Audit your slots properly.<\/strong> Most people at the limit are being blocked by two or three devices they no longer own. If there&#8217;s an album you want on every device you own, buying it once removes it from this equation permanently.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"122:1-122:334;9913-10246\"><strong>Consider whether Spotify is still the right service.<\/strong> If the constraints are consistently in your way, other platforms have different limits and different catalogs, and <a class=\"underline underline underline-offset-2 decoration-1 decoration-current\/40 hover:decoration-current focus:decoration-current\" href=\"https:\/\/spotidown.net\/en\/transfer-spotify-music-to-another-service\/\">moving your playlists across<\/a> takes minutes now that most services have built-in importers.<\/p><h2 class=\"mt-3 -mb-1 text-[1.125rem] font-bold\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"124:1-124:45;10248-10292\"><strong>A note on the &#8220;bypass the limit&#8221; articles<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"126:1-126:134;10294-10427\">Search this topic and most of the results promise to break the device cap using converter software that turns your library into MP3s.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"128:1-128:354;10429-10782\">Give those a miss. They work by stripping the encryption off Spotify&#8217;s files, which is a legal violation in its own right, distinct from copyright infringement, under Section 1201 of the DMCA in the US and equivalent provisions in the EU Copyright Directive. It breaches Spotify&#8217;s terms of use, and that software category is a well-known malware vector.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"130:1-130:226;10784-11009\">There&#8217;s also a practical point buried under the pitch. Almost nobody who hits this limit is genuinely using five active devices. They&#8217;re blocked by an old phone.
