Or it sits on “Waiting to download” indefinitely. Or half a playlist comes through, and the rest stays grey.

There are about a dozen causes for this, and they’re not equally likely. Work through them in the order below rather than jumping to the reinstall, because the first four account for most cases and take under a minute each. The full app reinstall is at the bottom for a reason.

Check you’re actually on Premium

Downloads are a Premium feature. That’s not new, but subscriptions lapse quietly and the app doesn’t make a fuss about it.

Open your profile, go to Settings, and look at the account section. If it says Free, that’s your answer. The most common reason isn’t that someone cancelled deliberately; it’s that a card expired and the renewal failed. Spotify emails about this, but those emails have a habit of landing in promotions.

Worth knowing if you’re on free either way: your playlists and Liked Songs are untouched. Downloads are the only thing the free tier takes away, which is covered in more detail in our guide to what you keep and lose when Premium ends.

There’s a related trap on family and duo plans. Both require the account holder and members to share a home address, and Spotify re-verifies periodically. Fail the check and the member account quietly drops to free while everything still looks normal at a glance.

Turn off Offline Mode

This one catches an enormous number of people, and the irony is that the setting exists to help with exactly what you’re trying to do.

Offline Mode tells the app to stop touching the network. If it’s on, Spotify cannot download anything, because downloading requires a connection. People switch it on to save data, forget about it, then wonder why nothing new will save.

Go to Settings> Playback on mobile, and look for the Offline toggle. Turn it off, download what you need, then turn it back on afterwards if you want.

Worth knowing: you don’t actually need Offline Mode to play downloaded songs. Downloads play fine when the connection drops on its own. The toggle just forces the behaviour and prevents accidental streaming.

Free up storage

Spotify wants at least 1 GB of headroom, and more if you’re pulling down large playlists. Below that, downloads fail or stall without a useful error message.

It needs room for three separate things: the downloads themselves, temporary files while each track is being written, and the app cache. A phone that reports 800 MB free is not going to manage a 500-song playlist.

Check your actual free space in the phone’s own settings rather than trusting Spotify’s storage screen. On iPhone that’s Settings, General, iPhone Storage. On Android it’s Settings, Storage.

While you’re there, note what Spotify itself is using. If it’s several gigabytes and you don’t remember downloading that much, most of it is cache rather than downloads, which brings us to the next step.

There’s one behaviour worth knowing about here: when a device gets critically low on space, Spotify will start deleting downloaded tracks on its own to keep functioning. So low storage doesn’t just block new downloads, it can quietly erase existing ones.

Clear the cache

Spotify’s cache stores streamed audio, images, and metadata, and a corrupted cache can produce exactly the symptoms described in this article: downloads that start but never finish, or a download button that does nothing at all.

Settings, then Storage, then Clear cache. This does not delete your downloads, and it does not touch your playlists. It only clears temporary files, which Spotify rebuilds as you use it.

Restart the app afterwards. On mobile, that means swiping it out of the app switcher, not just backgrounding it.

If you’re on Android and using a cleaner app or an aggressive battery optimiser, add Spotify to its exclusion list. Those tools kill background processes, and a large download is a long-running background process. Same goes for Android’s own battery optimisation: Settings, Apps, Spotify, Battery, and set it to unrestricted while you’re downloading.

The device limit

Here’s the one that produces the most confusion, because the error message points at something you can’t see.

Spotify allows downloads on five devices per account, with up to 10,000 tracks on each. That’s 50,000 songs offline across everything, which sounds generous until you realise how the five slots get used up.

Every device you’ve ever downloaded on holds a slot. An old phone in a drawer. A tablet you stopped using. A laptop you sold. Spotify has no dashboard showing which devices are occupying slots, and support can’t easily see it either. If you get “you’re out of offline devices,” you’re probably being blocked by hardware you no longer own.

Two ways out:

Remove downloads from a device you still have. Open Spotify on it, go to Settings, Storage, and hit Remove all downloads. That frees the slot immediately. On Android, clearing the app’s data does the same thing.

Wait out the licence. A device that stays offline for 30 days has its offline licence revoked automatically and its slot released. So if the blocking device is genuinely gone, the slot will free itself within a month of the last time that device connected.

If neither works, contact Spotify support directly. They can look at the account from their side and clear devices, though this takes a few days.

The 10,000-track ceiling

Separate from the device count. Each device tops out at 10,000 downloaded tracks, and when you hit it, new downloads simply stop.

The app doesn’t warn you as you approach it. Most people discover the limit by watching a playlist refuse to download while everything else looks fine.

Ten thousand songs is roughly 650 hours of music. If you’re genuinely at that ceiling, the honest fix is to prune. Downloading your entire library is a habit that made sense when data was expensive and doesn’t really anymore.

Check the connection, and check Spotify

A weak connection will stall downloads even when streaming seems fine. Streaming buffers a few seconds at a time; downloading pulls entire files at whatever quality you’ve set.

Speaking of which: Settings, Audio quality, Download. If it’s on Very High, each track is substantially larger. On a slow connection, dropping to High makes downloads finish rather than time out, and on a phone speaker you will not hear the difference.

Also try switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data. Some networks, particularly on university and corporate Wi-Fi, throttle or block the traffic patterns Spotify uses for bulk downloads. If it works on mobile data but not on your office Wi-Fi, that’s the answer, and there’s nothing to fix on your end.

And check whether the problem is Spotify’s rather than yours. Downdetector will tell you within seconds whether thousands of other people are seeing the same thing. Server-side download failures happen, and no amount of reinstalling helps.

Fix your device’s clock

Odd but real. If your phone’s date and time are wrong, Spotify’s authentication against its servers fails, and download licensing is part of that authentication.

Set date and time to automatic. iPhone: Settings, General, Date & Time. Android: Settings, General management, Date and time.

This is more common than it sounds after a phone has been off for a long stretch or after travel across time zones with automatic time disabled.

Songs that will never download

Some tracks are grey and won’t download no matter what, and the problem isn’t your setup.

Tracks pulled from the catalog. Licensing deals expire and music comes down. A song in your playlist that’s gone from Spotify’s catalog stays visible in the list but greyed out, permanently. Nothing recovers it except the rights holder putting it back.

Regional unavailability. A track licensed in one country may not be licensed in yours. If you moved countries or changed the account’s region, parts of your library can go grey.

Local files. Songs you added from your own drive show up in Spotify but were never in its catalog. They sync to mobile only over a shared Wi-Fi network with the desktop app open and Local Files enabled on both ends. They also don’t count as downloads in the normal sense. If your “downloads” that won’t work are all local files, this is a completely different problem with a completely different fix.

Podcast episodes with their own restrictions. Some exclusives and some region-locked shows won’t save.

Before you spend an hour troubleshooting, check whether the songs that won’t download are greyed out in the app. Greyed out means unavailable, not broken.

The 30-day rule

Spotify requires you to connect to the internet at least once every 30 days to keep downloads alive. Miss that window and the offline licence is revoked and everything needs re-downloading.

This exists because Spotify reports playback data back to rights holders in order to pay them. No connection, no reporting, no licence.

If you’ve come back from a long trip and everything is grey, this is almost certainly why. Connect, let the app sync for a minute, and re-download. This is also one of several reasons an offline library can vanish overnight, and we’ve broken down the full list in why Spotify downloads disappear and how to get them back.

Reinstalling, properly

Last resort, and worth doing properly rather than half-heartedly.

Before you uninstall, remove your downloads through Settings, Storage, Remove all downloads. This releases the device slot. If you skip this and just delete the app, the slot may stay occupied by a device that no longer exists, and you’ve made things worse.

iPhone: delete the app, restart the phone, reinstall from the App Store, sign in, re-download.

Android: Settings, Apps, Spotify, Storage, Clear data, then uninstall. Large simultaneous downloads are more likely to stall.

A note on Offline Backup

Spotify added a feature that solves a related problem and most people haven’t noticed it. Offline Backup takes your recently streamed songs and assembles them into a single offline-ready playlist automatically, with no downloading on your part. If your connection drops and you’d forgotten to download anything, it’s already there.

Open the app while disconnected, or search for “Offline Backup.” It won’t replace deliberate downloading, but it’s a decent safety net for the specific case of a commute you didn’t prepare for.

About the “just convert them to MP3” advice

Search this problem and you’ll find dozens of articles that walk through a few genuine fixes and then pivot into recommending software that converts your library into MP3 files so you never have to deal with download limits again.

Skip that. Those tools work by stripping the DRM off Spotify’s encrypted files, which is a distinct legal violation from copyright infringement itself, covered by Section 1201 of the DMCA in the US and by equivalent rules in the EU Copyright Directive. It’s a breach of Spotify’s terms of use, which risks the account. And that specific software category has a long history of shipping malware alongside the advertised function.

It also doesn’t solve the problem you actually have. If your downloads are failing because storage is full or a device slot is occupied, converting files to MP3 doesn’t address either.

If particular songs matter enough that you want them permanently and unconditionally, buy them. Individual tracks are about $1.29 from the iTunes Store or Amazon, artists sell directly on Bandcamp, and a purchased file works in any app on any device forever. Fifteen songs costs less than two months of Premium.
